So, you’re an Expat based in Malaysia? GREAT! Welcome to the Expats Club, the expat community in Malaysia, that focuses on community! So, a little explanation in to who we are, we started back in February 2024. There's me, Joshua, a British Expat who lives in Malaysia on an Employment Visa and Rachel, a Malaysian local with an amazing knack for digital marketing. Before moving to Malaysia, I lived in around 40 countries, working remotely around the world. Every time you move to a new country, you have to start again. That’s from finding a new apartment, phone company, working out the public transport and which apps you have to download in your new home. You also have to go through your visa process, find schools for the kids, change your drivers license, I mean, the list goes on and on and on.
And sometimes, you don’t know who to ask about this? I mean, there’s Facebook groups sure, I use them myself. But Facebook groups still feel just like writing to 1000’s of total strangers and hoping the right person is online at any one time. Then you have networking events, I mean, they can be great. But often you find yourself just disitnerested in the subject and conversation, coming home with 100’s of business cards in your pocket that you’re never going to reach out too. So after attending an event I was asked to cohost, realising that if I was missing a community, then there was probably someone else who as too, the Expats Club was Born.
We started with just a simple KL Curry Club, which was just expats meeting for a curry and raising a little money for charity once a month. The numbers quickly grew from 20, to 40, to 70, to 90 expats an event, we even host the Penang and Bangkok Curry Clubs now, moving to Jakarta, Manilla, Pattaya and Ho Chi Min in 2025! We have raised so much for foundations such as The Lost Food Project, Pads and Paws KL, Soi Dogs, Ruff Love, Amitbha and much more.. We have a WhatsApp community of over 1000 members, have a great following on Instagram, tiktok and LinkedIn and have expanded beyond what we could ever comprehend.
We now mix and match events on a monthly basis, we have pickleball, padel, badminton and hiking events, as well as Golf, Go karting and even MM2H and Expat retiree lunches every 2nd thursday of the month. Rachel has also expanded into a Womens only group called ‘She knows a spot’ for womens only events such as Sip and Pain, Girlie brunches and the next event which is cookie decorating and arabic food.
Our whole view on the Expats Club, is that we do the stuff that we enjoy, because it makes it real. If we wouldn’t enjoy doing something, we wouldn’t expect you to either. Which is why we have over 45 different nationalities who join us on a regular basis. We also listen to you, so if there’s something you need help with or an idea for an event you have, tell us, we’ll make it happen.
