Since the start of the Expat Club, we have always felt it necessary to add a charitable aspect into everything we do. I feel whenever your in a position to give back, you have to. Especially if you’re living abroad, just to give back to the country that accepted you. One charity we have worked with a lot, is The Lost Food project. So who are the Lost Food Project?

“Approximately one-third of all food produced for human consumption is lost or wasted worldwide. According to SWCorp Malaysia, 44.5 percent of the 16,667.5 tonnes of food waste generated in Malaysia daily. About 24 percent of the total food waste is still edible, with the quantity sufficient to feed 2,970,000 hungry people, three times a day.

Yet hunger and malnutrition remains a global problem. Some 800 million people throughout the world go to bed hungry and one-third of all people lack essential nutrients. The Lost Food Project rescues ‘lost’ (or surplus) food quality, nutritious food from going to landfill, and redistribute these food to up to 60 charities and soup kitchens as well as numerous B40 communities who live below the poverty line. Since 2016 (to Oct 2023), TLFP has rescued 6.7 million kg of food, provided 19.3 million meals to the hungry and prevented 18.9 million kg of greenhouse gas emissions from landfills in Malaysia.”

We had the opportunity to see where our donations were going, and volunteered in their warehouse. The thing about taking Surplus from food waste, is you can’t be picky. The first time I worked alongside the Lost Food Project, the produce was potatoes, lettuce and coriander, this time it was Papaya, kangkung and limes. As the shipments are brought into the warehouse by lorry, they have to be carefully offloaded by the volunteers. Then sorted from what can be eaten and what can’t be. Then equally separated into containers, ready for pick up by the many homes who rely on them to eat. One thing I noticed, is the produce comes in quicker then it goes out.

They are forever needing more volunteers, donations and food donors. So if you would like to volunteer with them, send me a whatsapp: +60148459471 or if you would like to donate, go to their donation
